There might be gold in them ‘thar hills, but it was silver in the water for the Hamilton Water Polo Club’s men’s team at the Canadian National league championships.
The No. 2 ranked eastern Canadian team advanced to Sunday’s final after scoring victories against Calgary (in overtime) and Pacific Dynamos. Hamilton’s Aaron Bertram scored the winning overtime goal against Calgary with seven seconds remaining to play. The Victoria-base Pacific Dynamos are rated No. 1 in Western Canada.
Hamilton’s gold medal game appearance marked the first time since 1981 that a Hamilton team made it to the final of the senior men’s division.
Hamilton lost to the Regina Squids in the tournament finale.
In addition to the second place finish, Hamilton coach Quinn was named Coach of the Year and Bertram won a spot on the tournament’s allstar team.
