Barrie, ON — Don Thomson Jr. has taken the early points lead in the CASCAR Super Series, thanks to a second place finish in the season’s opening race on the holiday weekend.
The veteran Hamilton driver had earned the pole position and led for 142 of the GO-RACING.CA 300 event’s 265 lap feature at Barrie Speedway on Monday. Thomson, in his Home Hardware Chevy, has 249 points, 11 more than race winner Scott Steckly of Milverton, who won his first-ever Super Series event..
Thomson was able to grab second place when Mark Dilley’s car spun out after running through spilled fluid from another car. Thompson is aiming for a sixth consecutive CASCAR Super Series national championship. The series resumes June 10 in Montreal.
Brantford’s Doug Brown recorded his best-ever Super Series race with a fourth place finish. Other Hamilton-area drivers who finished the race include: Dave Jacombs (Mt. Hope), 10th; Jeff Lapcevich (Caistor Centre), 14th; Ron VanEs (Smithville), 15th; and Jim Lapcevich (Hamilton), 16th.
