Longhorns come up short in Northern Football Conference kickoff


It was a rough start to the Oakville Longhorns’ Northern Football Conference schedule. Playing on home turf at Bronte Field, the Longhorns were blanked 26-0 by the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers. The Soo’s Josh Gauthier rushed for three of the Steelers touchdowns.

Oakville will try and even its record next Saturday when the Tri City (Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge) Outlaws visit Bronte Field.

In other season-opening action.on June 3, the Outlaws robbed Sudbury Spartans 62-13 ( Jeff Nosal scored 2 touchdowns for Tri City); Toronto Raiders plundered North Bay Bulldogs 42-2; and Quinte-Limestone Panthers clawed the Sarnia Imperials 18-0.

The Toronto Maddogs had the weekly bye.

The Milton at Oshawa game was postponed.

Next week’s scheduled games in the 11-team league include the Toronto Maddogs visiting Milton, 3 p.m., Milton District High School; North Bay travelling to Quinte-Limestone, 4 p.m., Bayridge Secondary School; Sault St.Marie at Sarnia, 7 p.m., Norm Perry Park; and Toronto Raiders playing in Oshawa, 7 p.m., Oshawa Civic stadium.

Sudbury has the bye.
