Thunderbirds pound Stratford in lopsided Intercounty baseball win

STRATFORD – A seven-run explosion in the sixth inning propelled the visiting Hamilton Thunderbirds to a decisive 11-1 Intercounty Baseball League win over the Stratford Nationals Friday night (June 9).

Jon Robertson was an offensive force for the T-Birds, collecting five hits and driving in three runs to help Hamilton improve its record to 4-8. On the mound, Kevin Whyte (1-0) allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings for the win.

The Nationals, still looking for a win after 10 straight losses, scored their lone run in the eighth inning. Shawn Gillespie (0-2) surrendered 11 runs – 10 earned – and 15 hits in six innings to take the loss.

The two teams go at it again on Sunday (June 11) when the Nationals visit Bernie Arbour Stadium. Gametime is 2 p.m. The Thunderbirds will play their third game in four days when Barrie travels to Bernie Arbour. That game starts at 8 p.m.

In other IBL play on June 9, London Majors needed 10 innings to down the Kitchener Panthers 7-6. A throwing error allowed the winning run to score after the Majors tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
