Thomson Jr. settles for 23rd, Lapcevich takes second place

BOWMANVILLE, ONT. – Defending points leader Don Thomson Jr., of Hamilton had to settle for a 23rd place finish after running into engine trouble Sunday (June 18).

CASCAR Mosport Jeff Lapcevich (2nd), Kerry Micks (1st), and Scott Steckly (3rd)

Thomson, driving his Home Hardware Monte Carlo, started in the No. 10 pole position of Sunday’s 51-lap CASCAR Super Series Clarington 200 at Mosport Speedway and led for the first eight laps.

But Caistor Centre’s Jeff Lapcevich fared much better, taking second place in the 31-car field, the second event of the CASCAR series. Lapcevich and his Tim Hortons/EMCEA Transport Chevy passed Scott Steckly on the final lap to nail down the runnerup spot. He was just 1.6 seconds away from winning.

The checkered flag was taken by veteran Kerry Micks of Mt. Albert. The #02 Trailers by Jim Bray-sponsored Ford Taurus driver jumped into the lead on lap 32 and never looked back after his daring pass on leader Peter Gibbons as the field came up to speed after a caution flag re-start.

While Steckly and his ERB Transport Dodge Charger settled for third, that finish coupled with his win in the season opener at Barrie Speedway in May, was enough to move him to the top of the unofficial CASCAR Super Series point standings after two events.

The Clarington 200 was slowed by three cautions for a total of 15 laps. Polesitter J.R. Fitzpatrick set the fastest lap of the feature event for the second outing in a row. The Milwaukee Tools Chevy Monte Carlo driver led from laps 14 to 20, but fell to seventh at the end. Veteran Hamilton racer Jim Lapcevich (EMCEA Transport/Tim Hortons Chevy) passed Dave Whitlock (NTN Bower Dodge Charger) on the final lap to secure fourth place.

Super Series rookie Jason Hathaway was the Hard Charger of the race. The Snap On Tools Dodge Charger racer started 31st and finished eighth, working his way up to 23 positions during the Clarington 200.

The CASCAR Super Series resumes MOPAR Canada Day Weekend presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario on July 1-2 at
Barrie Speedway.
