Six strokes separates Wright and Junior Tour stop win at Hidden Lakes

BURLINGTON – Colin Wright of Burlington may have been the gracious host to Langton’s Kyle Demeester at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour.

The 17-year-old Wright shot a two-round total of 145 which was six strokes back of Demeester’s 139 that gave the 18-year-old the tour’s stop at the Hidden Lake Lake Club. Wright plays out of the Burlington course.

Demeester’s three-under par victory not only took the Boys 17 and up division title and overall low honours for the field but it earned the Delhi Golf Club member a spot on the four-player team in the CAN/USA Team matches at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona, this December.

Third place went to another Langton resident and Delhi GC member, Johnny Hall, 17, one stroke back of Wright at 146.

Being the good host seemed to be the order of the day, too, in the Boys 14-16 division. Evan Olsthoorn, 16, of St. Catharines and the St. Catharines Golf Club, fired 72-76 (148) to claim a three stroke victory over Oscar Rundsztuk, 16, of Milton. Rundsztuk also plays out of Hidden Lake. Third place went to Jaimie Trotman, 16, of Port Elgin, who shot 73-79 (152).

Lucas Kim, 12, of Etobicoke and Centennial Golf Club, claimed the Boys 13 and under champion’s title after posting scores of 72-78 (150). Four strokes back was Gajan Sivabalasingham, 12, of Markham and the Mandarin Golf Club, who fired rounds of 78-76 (154). Christian Jeffery, 12, of Burlington, came in third spot with scores of 81-83 (164), and also scooped his division’s Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition. Kim won the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive.

Kitchener boys Andrew Smith, 15, and Matt Burkhart, 17, won both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and the Sundog KP in the Boys 14-16 and Boys 17 and up divisions respectively.

The junior tour resumes its Ontario schedule on July 30-31 with the Ontario PGA Junior Championship at Forest City National Golf Club in London. This stop is a major order-of-merit point tournament and qualifier for the North American Junior Championship in New Braunfels, Texas in December.

The national Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals. The program helps develop Canada’s junior golfers, offering clinics, tournaments, international competitions and more.
