Local players make the grade for Basketball Ontario teams

There will be a strong Hamilton and area flavour to Basketball Ontario’s Under 17 and Under 15 men’s and women’s provincial teams. Ten players performed well enough at regional tryouts and Elite Development Camps in July to win their way onto the teams, which will participate in national championships next month.

On the Women’s U17 squad, Brantford’s Ali Dzikowski who plays for the Kitchener Waterloo Lightning, joins her Burlington teammate Jacklyn Selfe. Also on the team is Dundas’ Jenny Vaughan, who plays for the Burlington Panthers.

On the Men’s U17 squad, Milton’s Al Alilovic and Lynden’s Mike Allison were selected. Alilovic plays for the Milton Madd Dawgs and Alison suits up for the Burlington Panthers.

The Women’s U15 team borrowed heavily from Hamilton Transway and Burlington Panthers. Transway teammates Brittany McFarlane of Hamilton and Lauren Wheeler of Ancaster join Panthers Xandra Yantzi of Burlington and Julia Barac of Hamilton.

Oakville’s Pat Donnelly, a member of Oakville Vytis joins the Men’s U15 team.

The U15 and U17 women teams will attend national championships in Lennoxville, Quebec from August 1-5. Games will be held at Bishops University and College de Sherbrooke. The U15 and U17 men’s squads will be in Vancouver at the same time for their national championships. Games will be hosted by Simon Fraser University.

In 2005, Team Ontario won the U15 Men’s and Women’s national championships. Team Ontario also swept gold at the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina.
