Thunderbirds open Intercounty baseball playoffs in Toronto


The seventh-place Hamilton Thunderbirds (14-22) will meet the second-place Toronto Maple Leafs (25-11) in the opening round of the Intercounty Baseball League playoffs.

The best-of-seven senior series, one of four, kicks off Sunday at Toronto’s Christie Pits at 2pm. The series will resume Tuesday in Hamilton, 7:30pm at Bernie Arbour Stadium and return to Toronto the following night for a 7:30pm game; game four brings the series back to Bernie Arbour Stadium on Friday, August 4 at 7:30pm. A fifth game, if necessary will be played in Toronto on Sunday, August 6, 2pm with a sixth the following night at 7:30pm.

The other best-of-seven matchups have the pennant-winning Barrie Baycats (26-10) meeting eighth-place Oshawa Dodgers (14-22); third-place Brantford Red Sox taking on the sixth-place Guelph Royals; and the fourth-place London Majors hosting the fifth-place Kitchener Panthers.

In IBL play last night, Toronto edged Oshawa, 3-2, and Kitchener handled last-placed Stratford Nationals, 7-1.

In Toronto, Matt Logan’s first inning three-run home run paced the Maple Leafs win on the last night of regular season play.

Mike Lynch (3-3) allowed two runs and six hits while striking out seven batters and walking two in an eight-inning performance. Doug Dimma pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save. Damon Topolie had three hits for the Leafs.

Ben Chisholm (0-4) allowed three runs and four hits in a two-inning start. Brett Prosper had a pair of hits, scored a run and stole a base for the Dodgers.

In Stratford, Scott Schmidt hit a two-run homer for the Panthers. Harpreet Padded added a solo blast in the game.
Yo Ochiai, Mickey Campaneau and Justin Wendt combined to hold Stratford to one run on four hits.

Simon Liston and Justin Pennel allowed seven runs and seven hits while Tyler Kmetko singled home Stratford’s run in the first inning.
