Junior golf crown hopes tossed about by winds

SUSSEX, N.B – Local golfers chasing the 2006 Canadian Junior Boys Championship found themselves blown away … literally. Winds that reached 48 km/h with gusts topping out at 61, sent scores soaring for many. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C. enjoyed an early lead after his opening round Monday.

The 18-year-old Taylor, a member of the National Junior Boys Amateur Team, had a one-over-par 71 for a five-stroke lead on Brad Revell of Kingston, Ont. Revell, the 2005 Investor’s Group Ontario Junior Boys champion, is second while four others are knotted in third at 77 on the 6,468-yard Sussex Golf and Curling Club.

Oakville’s Brian Churchill-Smith, a juvenile, had the best round for Hamilton and area golfers. He shot a 79 that left him in a 13-way tie for 14th place in the Junior division. But in the Juvenile division, Churchill-Smith is tied with five others for the lead.

Also battling the wind and the course were Cambridge’s Michael McKenzie and Brad Larente, who shots 80s, and were tied with nine others in 27th place; Port Colborne’s Adam Wilson, tied with 10 others in 38th spots, with 81s; Burlington’s Adam Hunter and Dundas’ Mackenzie Hughes, had 85s which left them and nine others tied at 84th; Oakville’s Ryan Corbin and 17 others are tied for 95th, after rounds of 86; Georgetown’s Ryan Thomson and eight others are tied for 127th with scores of 89; Georgetown’s Ryan Putnam and Burlington’s Daniel Difrancesco, had 91s for a share of 139th with seven others; Georgetown’s Luke Ovenden shares 148th place with five others after a 92.

Defending champion Mitchell Fox of Okotoks, Alta, had a disappointed day battling the wind conditions, carding an 82 and sitting tied in 49th place. 2004 Champion Rafael Lee of Burnaby, B.C. is tied for third at 77 while 2004 Canadian Men’s Amateur champion Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C. opened with a 78 and is tied with seven others in seventh place.

The junior championship is open to male amateurs who have not reached their 19th birthday by midnight, August 10. The juvenile division open to males who have not reached their 17th birthday by the same date. The scores of the juvenile golfers will also count for the junior championship. The championship is conducted at stroke play over 72 holes. The field is open to 162 players. After 54 holes, the field is cut to the low 70 and ties.

In inter-provincial team championship play, British Columbia has a seven stroke lead over Québec. The 2005 defending champions sit first at 227 while Québec is at 234. Ontario is in third just a stroke back of Québec at 235.

Play resumes with the second round today. The third and fourth rounds are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

As part of the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s Pathway to Champions, the national junior champion earns an exemption into the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. And that winner takes one of two Canadian Open exemptions. The amateur’s tournament will be played at the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club on August 11-18.

The Canadian Open is set for September 4-10 at the Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ancaster.
