Brantford’s Vandermade seven strokes back of junior girls golf leader

BATHURST, N.B. – Nicole Vandermade of Brantford sits in third place, one stroke back of second place at the Royale National Junior Girls Championship. Vandermade shot a one-under 71 to giver her a two-round total of 145. Sitting a stroke in front of her is Sara-Maude Juneau of Fossambault-sur-le-Lac, Quebec.

Enjoying a six-stroke lead over Juneau is Maude-Aimee Leblanc. The Windsor (Quebec) golfer came home with a one-under par 71 which gave her a two-day total of 138 on the Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club.

Leblanc got Wednesday off to a strong start, carding two early birdies and a single bogey to make the turn at one-under par. Her strong play was evident when she birdied the 11th and 14th holes, but she fell victim to her powerful, yet often inconsistent driver, as she tried to close out her round.

“I couldn’t have driven the ball any worse than I did today,” said the 17-year-old who plays out of Asbestos Golf Course. “My putter wasn’t very good either; I missed some really short putts.”

As the tournament continues, Leblanc’s desire to win grows stronger. “I don’t really know too many of the competitors out here,” said Leblanc “but I know I can win this.”

Anita Gahir of Thornhill (Ontario) who was tied for second with Kylie Frederick of Parksville (BC) struggled on the day, shooting a 76 which dropped her into a tie for fourth. “I should have scored much better today. The wind died down, but today’s pins were much more difficult than yesterday,” said Gahir. “I just couldn’t put my game together.”

In inter-provincial team play, Québec ended a 16-year drought by finishing 14-strokes ahead of British Columbia to take home the championship. Ontario finished third, a single-stroke back of team British Columbia.

Play continues at the Royale National Junior Girls’ Championship Thursday and Friday.
