Intercounty post-season awards miss Thunderbirds


Hamilton Thunderbirds and Stratford Nationals were shutout of post-season honours when the Intercounty Baseball League announced major award winners and all-star teams yesterday.
Hamilton finished regular season play in seventh place in the nine-team circuit with a 14-22 record while Stratford was last with a 6-30 showing.

Taking the league’s Rawling’s Most Valuable Player award was catcher Jordan Lundberg of the Barrie Baycats. He follows Ryan Spataro as consecutive winners of the MVP Award from the Barrie Baycats.

Lundberg led the IBL with 12 home runs and 40 RBI while finishing seventh with a .341 batting average in 35 games. He was also among the league leaders with 34 runs scored.

Lundberg collected 28 points in the voting, including five first-place votes while Brad McElroy of the London Majors was runner-up with 12 points and Frankie Hare of the Guelph Royals was third in the voting with 11 points.

Rookie of the Year and winner of the Brian Kerr Memorial Trophy is outfielder Rudy Vallejos of the London Majors.

In his first season, Vallejos hit .304 with two home runs and 41 RBI. The Ottawa native also hit five doubles, scored 28 runs and was fourth in the league with 19 stolen bases in 30 games. He collected 21 points in the voting, including three first-place ballots while Toronto Maple Leafs’ pitcher Mike Lynch was second with 13 points and Mike Roeder of the Kitchener Panthers was third with 11 points.

The All-Star teams were selected by the field managers of each club on a five-three point system. Clubs were not allowed to vote for their own players.
