Brantford Red Sox are one game away from joining London Majors in the finals for the senior Intercounty Baseball League crown.
The Sox pounded out 13 hits in turning back the Toronto Maple Leafs 9-4, giving Brantford a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven semifinal series. The two teams play game five Wednesday night in Toronto.
The fourth place finishing London Majors surprised pennant winning Barrie Baycats, taking their semifinal affair in five games after Tuesday night’s 7-2 win.
Playing at home, Brantford’s Al Stevens had a pair of hits, including a triple, and scored two runs to spark the Red Sox offence.
Brantford also got a double and homerun from Lee Delfino while Tyler Burnell had a homerun.
Picking up the win was Stefan Strecker, who evened his playoff record at 1-1. All four Toronto runs were charged to him, but one was unearned. He surrendered seven hits before giving way to Ryan Brickman who pitched two scoreless innings.
Paul Spoljaric, the mainstay of the Leafs pitching staff, took his second playoff loss against one win, while being tagged for eight hits that led to five runs. Spoljaric struck our eight Sox batters and walked one in the six innings he was on the mound.
Shane Ridley had two of Toronto’s hits with Mark Zamojc hitting a homerun and driving in two runs.
The visiting Majors rode the strong arm of Josh Palmer, 2-1 in the post season, to finish their series. Palmer pitched a complete game and fanned 10 Barrie batters, while giving up seven hits.
He got support from Kyle Piwowarczyk who was three-for-five at the plate and scored three runs. Kevin Virtue also had a three-hit effort with Chuck Roberts connecting for a homerun.
