Shotputter Andrews falls short at world junior track and field meet

Melissa Boekelman of the Netherlands won the shotput event in Beijing.

Georgetown’s Kaitlyn Andrews was eliminated in the first round of shotput competitions at the opening of the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Beijing.

Andrews, who turned 18 on July 25, put the shot only 13.99 metres, well below the qualifying standard of 15.4. Her personal best is 14.59.

Her first two tries were 12.66m and 13.04m.

The Netherlands Melissa Boekelman led all qualifiers with a 16.47m effort and went on to win the event with a heave of 17.66m.
