Shepley aims for personal best at Women’s Pro Tour event

Oakville’s Jessica Shepley could get her first top-10 pro career finish this year if she continues her consistent pattern for Friday’s final round of the CN Canadian Women’s Tour Championship.

The 23-year-old Shepley carded a second 74 Thursday to give her a two-round total of 148 and fourth place. The Kirkland, (Quebec) native sits eight shots back of leader Lisa Meldrum who fired a three-under par 69 Thursday to retain her lead. That lead is a two-stroke margin over Kim Brozer of Red Deer, Alberta.

Shepley’s best finish since turning pro in 2005 was a 15th placing last March at the Greater Tampa Duramed in Riverview, Florida.

Liz Earley of St. Catharines cut three strokes off her opening round of 77 on Wednesday to sit in a two-way tie for eighth with a 151 total.

In a knot with three others at 14th is Burlington’s Carrie Vaughan (76-79). Brantford’s Jennifer Jaszek (85-78) is bunched with four others at 40th.

In addition to the tourney crown, the golfers are chasing the lead for top position on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour Order of Merit standings which will earn the winner the Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year honours and an additional $3,000.

Meldrum needs a victory to clinch the title with Shepley, Taya Battistella of Bend, Ore, USA, and Corina Kelepouris of Drayton, Valley, Alta., all still within striking distance. Also up for grabs will be an exemption into the 2007 CN Canadian Women’s Open held Aug. 13 – 19, at Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club in Edmonton, Alta.
