McMaster baseball look to go over .500 against Guelph Gryphons

McMaster Marauders men’s baseball team will be looking to go over the .500 mark on Sunday when they welcome the Guelph Gryphons to Bernie Arbour Stadium.

The Ontario University Athletic’s game has a 1 p.m. start when the Marauders put their 2-2 record against the Gryphons 2-2 start. The teams are also evenly matched in the runs department. Mac has scored 13 to Guelph’s 15 and given up 19 to Guelph’s 18.

The Marauders opened the season with a 6-1 away win in Waterloo. Designated hitter David White and centre fielder Jason Collins each drove in a pair of runs for the Marauders. The pitching decision went to Tom Sidorkewicz who pitched a three-hitter, struck out 12 and walked two.
Mac followed that game with another road win, edging the Brock Badgers, 6-5 in extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Nick Chisholm in relief of Matthew Piccini picked up the mound decision in the 10th and third extra inning. Simon Caverly, the designated hitter, had two RBI for the Marauders.

The “nightcap” went to Brock, 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel. WP Jason Muller and LP Eric Conlon held their opponents to three hits each. Brock scored the winning run in the sixth inning. Mac second baseman Brad Hutchinson was 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the opening game at their new on campus ballpark, the University of Toronto Blues hammered the Marauders, 11-0. Toronto tagged McMaster starter Brian Molloy for seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back. Toronto starter Jake Gallo held the Marauders to just three hits over six innings of work to earn the win.

Mac, Guelph, Western, and Brock are tied for second with six points. The undefeated Blues (3-0) top the league. Mac’s game in London Wednesday night was cancelled because of rain.
