The Mohawk men’s volleyball team tuned up for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association campaign with a 3-1 pre-season win over the Redeemer Royals at the Fennell Gym Friday (Sept. 15). Mountaineers took the game by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-16.
Jasmine Cull led the Mountaineers with 20 offensive points including 14 kills, three stuff blocks and three service aces. Kevin Watson contributed 10 kills and one block for the reigning OCAA champions.
Mohawk head coach James Bradley wasn’t expecting anything spectacular from the game which he was using to find problem areas. Bradley said his team didn’t really practise much hitting until the night before, preferring to concentrate on other aspects of the game, especially defense, for the last two weeks.
“Obviously our offense was not in rhythm, (there were) a lot of errors. That’s indicative of exhibition, but we’re learning to play together. We’re half veterans and half rookies and it’s going to take some time to really get that.”
The Mountaineers return to the court on Sept. 22 (Friday) when they visit the McMaster Marauders for another pre-season match. It starts at 7:00 p.m. at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.
