The unbeaten McMaster Marauders picked up their third win, and a good measure of respect, beating the Gee Gees 24-19 at Ottawa’s Frank Clair Stadium on Saturday.
Marauders overcame a 10-0 deficit with 17 second-quarter points and held the Gee Gees (2-1) to a pair of field goals in the final quarter. Mac scored a touchdown in the third period.
Marauders got their points from a 20-yard rush by running back Andre Sadeghian (Beamsville), a 31-yard carry by Rob Service (Waterloo), and a 20-yard effort from receiver Jordan Chartier (Brantford). Pauolo Faiazza kicked an 11-yard field goal and converted the majors.
The Gee Gees were Mac’s first real test in the OUA. Mac started the season beating York University Lions 33-16 and then pounded Waterloo Warriors 60-9. Last week the Gee Gees beat the defending Vanier Cup champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 29-19 to stop Laurier’s 21-game conference win streak.
This week (Sept. 23) Mac is on the road again, traveling to Windsor for the meeting of unbeaten teams. They play the 3-0 Lancers in a 7 p.m. game. Lancers beat the Queen’s Golden Gaels on Saturday, 22-18, in front of 10,000 homecoming fans at Kingston.
Burlington’s Glenn MacKay caught three first quarter touchdown passes and finished the day with six catches for 88 yards.
Windsor has also downed Waterloo, 42-2, and University of Toronto Blues, 61-17.
