The McMaster men’s rugby team was expected to defeat the Brock Badgers, just not by such a slim margin.
The Marauders, who opened their Ontario University Athletics season with a 79 – 0 victory over the Carleton Ravens last week, struggled to put together a consistent offensive attack on Saturday playing at home. Josh Manolakos (Bracebridge, ON) and rookie Mike Scholz (Oakville), each scored tries that where converted by Dante Dedominicis (Brantford). Dedominicis also scored a penalty goal to give Mac its 17-16 victory.
McMaster committed a penalty just five minutes into the game, but Brock could not convert. Brock played an excellent first half, providing a challenge for the Marauder defense.
The second half saw the Marauders extend their slim half time lead to 16 – 8 with a try from Scholz. Despite having Albert Chang (Kitchener) in the sin bin, Mac was rewarded a penalty goal that Dedominicis promptly converted. Brock kept the game close and scored another try but the Marauders held fast for the one point victory.
The 2-0 men’s rugby team looks to extend their winning streak to 13 games on Wednesday (Sept. 20) against the Waterloo Warriors. Game time is 3 p.m. on Mac’s Back 10 Field.
