The Mohawk Mountaineers came storming out of the gate to open the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association rugby season with a 24-5 victory over the Sir Sandford Fleming Knights in Peterborough Saturday night.
Jeff Perssia led Mohawk with two tries. Steve Johnston and Darcy Palmer had one each. James Cumpson picked up two conversions.
Mountaineers’ head coach Alex Paris expected an improvement in the team’s offense with a bigger and faster group of eight forwards and that was evident in the opener.
“In the 40 minutes of the first half we must have had the ball in the Fleming end for 30 minutes, said Paris. He added, had it not been for a few errors, the team could have scored even more.
“Still, we beat a good team. We will build on this and go from there. We have a lot of strong leadership throughout the team and a good core of guys.” Paris also praised his defense. “We had excellent tackling and lots of pressure.”
Mohawk will have another road game Saturday September 23 when they visit the Georgian Grizzlies in Barrie. The first home game will be Tuesday Sept. 26 when the Mountaineers entertain Kitchener’s Conestoga Condors.
