Late game rally set stage for Mac’s extra inning baseball win

McMaster Marauders could have dug into the bag of clichés for the second game of their doubleheader with Guelph Gryphons: It isn’t over til the fat lady sings. Better late than never. Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.

The Marauders found themselves trailing the Gryphons 6-0 in the sixth inning of the seven inning Ontario University Athletics affair. The visitors to Bernie Arbour Stadium, who had already won the first game 4-1, had scored a pair of first inning runs and added singles in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and were looking to sweep the twin bill.

But the Marauders poured six runs across the plate and forced Guelph to use every pitcher they had in their bullpen in sending the game into extra innings.

And a single by Jason Collins (Oakville White Oaks) in the bottom of the 10th inning plated Stephen Pacius (Oakville Loyola) to give McMaster a 7-6 win and a split of the two games.

In the first game, Tom Sidorkewicz (Hamilton Sherwood) went the full distance and held Guelph to seven hits. But he was done in by Matt Bylow (Orillia) who had a three-run homerun. Bylow also had a round tripper in the second game.

Anthony Janicas (Hamilton St. Thomas More) knocked in Mac’s lone run with a single to right that scored Nick Rogerson (Stoney Creek Bishop Ryan).

The Marauders will look to improve on their 3–3 record when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Game time at Bernie Arbour Stadium is 6:00 p.m.
