Mac’s fastball women come away from weekend with .500 OUA record

The McMaster Marauder women’s fast pitch team opened its 2006 Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) season winning two of four games on the weekend. On Saturday, McMaster took a pair of games from the visiting Guelph Gryphons, winning 2-0 and 7-1.

The first game remained scoreless until the fifth inning. Alicia Montgomery (Simcoe) started the inning with a double. Quinn MacDonald (Scarborough) singled to centre field scoring Montgomery. MacDonald then stole second base and advanced to third when Shannon Galea (Oshawa) singled. She scored on a wild pitch.

Galea, Mac’s rookie pitcher, gave up one 1 hit while striking out 8 Gryphons.

Marauders didn’t waste any time in the second game and struck for three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Marauders increased their lead in the second inning when Jenna Crane (Grand Valley, Ont.) scored on a single by Becky Leary (Richmond Hill). Sam Malone (Mississauga), Jacqueline Morrison (Toronto) and MacDonald all scored in the fourth inning, to complete Mac’s scoring.

On Sunday, the Marauders dropped a pair to the defending OIWFA champion Toronto Varsity Blues, losing 2-1 and 5-1. Starter Galea went the full distance for Mac but was tagged for the loss in the first game. She allowed seven hits and struck out three.

In the second game, the Marauders committed two errors and gave up two runs in the second inning. Toronto added three more runs in the fourth inning.

The Marauders play a twin bill with the York University Lions on Saturday (Sept. 23). Game times at Chinguacousy Park will be 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
