Mini Canada Games highlight Hamilton’s first Sports Festival

Hamilton’s first Community Sports Festival is set for Saturday, September 30. SportHamilton and the City of Hamilton will team together for a day of sport activities at Ancaster’s Morgan Firestone Arena, 385 Jerseyville Rd. W.

Youngsters aged 4-19 are invited to come out between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to try a new sport or activity such as track and field, rugby, fencing, gymnastics, sledge hockey, softball and soccer. There is no charge for this portion of the two-event day.

Then, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., the festival will hold an outdoor Mini Canada Games Team Event. Local teams of eight will compete as a Canadian province or territory with a chance win the Canada Games Flag and cash prizes.

There are three age categories for the Mini Canada Games, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18 years. The entry fee is just $10 per team. Entries will be limited to 12 teams per age category and accepted on a first-come basis.

The top team in each category wins the Canada Games Flag and $100, $50 and $25 will be presented to the first, second and third place teams respectively. Local Canada Games athletes will be on hand to take part in the awards ceremonies.
