Mountaineers find lively bats in OCAA women’s fastball sweep

The Mohawk women’s fastball team, which has had trouble scoring runs this season, swept a twin-bill from the visiting Canadore Panthers of North Bay, 9-5 and 6-0, in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association league play at Mohawk Sports Park Friday.

Katie Westboy picked up the opening game win, recording eight strikeouts. She also got good run support from Becky Matson, who had three runs-batted-in while Dana Steckle and Lauren Battaglia each drove in two runs and Samantha Tubman brought one home as well.

In the nightcap, Jenny Koschanow pitched a complete game, five-hitter and fanned nine. The Mountaineers exploded for five runs in the second inning, with Steckle’s three run double highlighting the inning. Megan Nadwodny and Katey Trevaskis also drove in runs.

Head Coach Brian Weller was pleased with his team’s effort. “Both games were all around good games. Our bats were much better. We scored some runs and had lots of people on base and in both games our pitchers were fantastic, keeping us in it from the beginning to the end. It was just an all around excellent game.”

The 3-3 Mountaineers are home again on Tuesday Oct. 3, when Conestoga visits Mohawk Sports Complex at 5:30.
