Bulldogs pickup their first AHL exhibition win, 7-2 over Marlies

Duncan Milroy and Maxim Lapierre each had a pair of goals to lead Hamilton Bulldogs to their first preseason American Hockey League win, a 7-2 drubbing of the Toronto Marlies.

Playing at the Southwood Arena in Woodstock on Saturday, the Bulldogs took an early lead with three first period goals. Just 1:30 into the game, Milroy opened the scoring with his second preseason goal. Lapierre made the score 2-0 with his first goal of the preseason at 12:40 of the frame and less than two minutes later, Andre Benoit notched his first goal of the preseason to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

Marlies forward Jiri Tlusty scored the lone goal of the second period at the 5:08 mark, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 3-1.

The Bulldogs outscored the Marlies 4-1 in the third period including two goals on the power play. Zack Stortini got his first goal of the preseason at the 3:47 mark, followed by Lapierre’s second preseason goal just 1:04 later. Kyle Chipchura notched his third assist of the game on Milroy’s team-leading third goal of the preseason at 13:51 of the frame on the power play. Tlusty registered his second goal of the game for Toronto at 14:04 of the period to make the score 6-2. Then with the man advantage, Mathieu Aubin closed out the game’s scoring with his second goal of the preseason with 1:09 remaining in the game.

Bulldogs goaltender Yann Danis was solid in goal stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced and posting the win. Justin Pogge made 26 saves on 33 shots and suffered the loss.

The ‘Dogs play their final pre-season game today (Sunday) when they will battle the Syracuse Crunch at Niagara Falls (Ont.) Memorial Arena.
