Mohawk Mountaineers women’s fastball team won it’s third straight Ontario Colleges Athletic Association game, edging Windsor St. Clair Saints 3-2 on Thursday.
The win lifts Mohawk’s record to 4-3 and avenges last week’s extra inning loss to the Saints, the defending OCAA champions. Mohawk is in fourth place.
Katie Westoby (Dundas) pitched a complete game five hitter, striking out four, and escaping a bases loaded, one out jam in the sixth inning when the Mountaineers were clinging to their one run lead.
Giving Westoby support was Jenny Koschanow (Dundas). She delivered a pair of two out, RBI singles in the second and fifth innings to give Mohawk its margin of victory. Katey Trevaskis (Ancaster) had two hits and scored two runs.
Defensively, Trevaskis and shortstop Samantha Tubman (Hamilton) made key defensive plays in the late innings to seal the win.
Kandice Bagley, in relief of Melissa Galamb, took the loss for the Saints. Candice Gatecliffe, with a two out triple in the fifth inning accounted for the only Saint runs.
The Mountaineers will play a rescheduled contest with third place Kitchener Conestoga on Tuesday Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Mohawk Sports Park. The game was rained out earlier this week.
