Lords and mud end Mohawk’s women’s soccer season

Hopes of at least repeating last year’s bronze medal finish in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association soccer championships ended on Saturday for the Mohawk Mountaineers.

Durham, and poor fields conditions, solved the usually stingy Mountaineers defence, and the result was a took a 6-0 win for the Lords. The divisional cross-over playoff game eliminated Mohawk from the soccer picture on Saturday. Rain leading up to the game worked against the visiting Mountaineers.

Mohawk head coach Renzo Castellani said it was a mud bowl. “I don’t want to take anything away from Durham, which is a good team and scored three very nice goals, but I think conditions suited them better than our team.

“I felt sorry for the girls having to finish this way. We have been playing very well. I would have liked to see what we’d have done on a better field.”

Durham advances to next weekend’s OCAA championship being hosted by Sheridan College.
