Mac women end rugby season with individual honours

McMaster Marauders women’s rugby team scored a hat trick in Ontario University Athletics Russell Division award winners. Mac took all three major honours and placed five players on the division’s first allstar team announced Monday.

Undefeated in regular season play, the Russell Division leaders, who shutout their competition in four games, had Sarah Van Hoof (Lindsay, Ont.) named Most Valuable player with Alison Morris (Stoney Creek) selected Rookie of the Year.

Mac’s No. 8, Van Hoof recorded 40 points from 10 conversion and four tries to tie for the team lead in scoring. The speedy wing Morris had two tries in her first OUA campaign and served notice she will be a challenge for opponents next season.

To cap Mac’s individual award trio, Sandro Fiorino was chosen Coach of the Year.

Joining teammate Van Hoof on the allstar squad were scrum half and fullback Nina Bui; prop Amber Purins, and locks Colleen George and Mel Perry.

Mac lost 35-7 to Western Mustangs in the OUA semifinal on the weekend with Van Hoof scoring all Mac’s points. On the weekend (Oct. 28) Mac lost the bronze medal game 3-0 to Laurier to end the season. A win would have kept Mac’s hopes alive for national honours by being the OUA’s third entry in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports championship.
