McMaster Marauders women’s basketball team lived up to its No. 1 national ranking with a 77-64 win over the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night.
Playing their Ontario University Athletics season opener at home, Mac got a 25 point effort from guard Lindsay DeGroot (Thedford, Ont.). In support of DeGroot, Sara Pilon-Bignell (Ancaster) and centre Chiara Rocca (Sarnia) had 13 points each with Taylor Smith dropping in another 12.
Mac led 39-30 at the half.
Much of the Marauders success came from the three-point arc where Mac hit on 64 per cent of its shots, compared to Western’s 11 per cent. Combined shooting only gave Mac a 43-37 per cent edge over Western who got 12 points each from guard Amanda Anderson (Chatham) and forward Elizabeth Lennox (Ottawa). Megan Lapointe (Burlington) had six points for Western.
Western is coached by Stephan Barrie, a former teacher at M.M. Robinson high school in Burlington.
In other OUA games, Guelph beat Brock 62-52 and Windsor downed Laurier 68-60.
Counting preseason competition Mac is 8-0 against Canadian teams. The women Marauders take to the OUA court again on Nov. 10 in Toronto against Ryerson Rams.
