Belot tops Mohawk scorers as consolation prize eludes cage Mountaineers


The Mohawk Mountaineers made it to the consolation final of the women’s Big Eight Basketball Classic in Oshawa but fell 66-31 to New York’s Jamestown Community College Jayhawks. Guard Erinn Belot (Hamilton) had seven points and forward Melissa Zwolak (Hamilton) added six for the Mountaineers.

Mohawk had one win and two losses in the tournament. They opened Friday night with a 62-43 loss to the Kirtland Community College Firebirds of Roscommon, Michigan Zwolak and guard Lisa Marie Iavarone (Hamilton) each scored seven points for the Mountaineers.

Mohawk rebounded and earned its consolation berth with a 46-42 triumph over the host Durham Lords Saturday morning. Guard Carrie Lawton (Hamilton) led the Mountaineers with 10 points. Forward Jennifer Snider (Orangeville) scored nine and Zwolak chipped in with seven.

Zwolak was named a tournament all-star.

Mohawk (0-3) goes after its first win in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association league play on Tuesday (Nov. 21) when the Fanshawe Falcons (1-1) visit the Fennell Gym at 6:00 pm.
