Mohawk Mountaineers picked up their first win of the season in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s basketball.
The Mountaineers took Windsor St. Clair Saints 53-46 on Friday (Dec.1) to give the Hamilton school a 1-5 record in the West Division. St. Clair is 1-2. Sault Ste. Marie Algoma tops the division with a 6-1 record.
Mohawk grabbed a quick 22-6 lead but when the teams went into their locker rooms at the half, the Mountaineers were holding onto a 26-22 margin.
Mohawk used a 9-0 run in the second half and exploited St. Clair’s foul problems, The Mountaineers went to the free-throw line 23 times.
Katie Goodburn (Chatham) paced Mohawk with 19 points, with Lisamarie Iavarone (Hamilton) adding another 14 and Melissa Zwolak (Hamilton) dropping in 10.
Windsor’s Ashley Huston (Harrow) and Brianne St. Clair (Stratford) had 12 each for the Saints.
The women don’t resume league play until Jan. 12, when they travel to Algoma.
