The deadline for nominations for the Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year is 11 days away.
Forms must be submitted by Dec. 31 for consideration for the award which goes to a male or female athlete meeting a number of criteria. The candidates must be a resident of Hamilton or Burlington, or have been a resident for a significant period of time. They can be professionals or amateurs but must have demonstrated superior athletic performances at the provincial, national or international level. The athlete’s performance could be as an individual or as part of a team but the award will be one award.
There is no age restriction.
The winner will be announced at the CYO Celebrity Dinner Thursday, February 22 at the Hamilton Convention Centre.
Past winners include swimmer Joanne Malar, cyclist Clara Hughes, middle distance runner Graham Hood, basketball player Titus Channer, paddler Mark Oldershaw, cyclist Sue Palmer-Komar, rower Joe Stankevicius, McMaster running back Jesse Lumsden and Hamilton Bulldog defenseman Danny Syvret.
Nomination forms can be picked up at The Hamilton Spectator. Completed forms may be dropped off at the Spectator, to the attention of Garry McKay or faxed to 905-526-3510.
