Mountaineers split two games at cage tourney

While regular league play in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association has shut down for the holiday period, the Mohawk Mountaineers men’s basketball team is keeping busy.

The Mountaineers won one and lost one at the New Balance Invitational Men’s Tournament at Oakville’s Sheridan College on Wednesday.

The Mountaineers got 22 points from Nick Gaspic in an 80-65 win over George Brown Huskies in their opening game. Igor Trbojevic added another 13 points and Panyin Kyei and Dave Almas had 12 each.

In the second game, Sheridan Bruins scored a 101-76 verdict over Mohawk, which had a 24-point effort from Gaspic. Kyei had 17 points and Matt Powless scored 14.

The Mountaineers get back into OCAA league play on the Jan. 12-13 weekend when they visit both Algoma and Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie.
