Mountaineers off to shaky start as league play set to resume

The Mohawk men’s basketball team suffered two defeats at a tournament at George Brown in Toronto over the weekend.

Seneca Sting beat the Mountaineers 83-62 in their opener Friday. Igor Trbojevic (Hamilton) had 24 points and Marko Gacic added 18 for Mohawk.

The following day the Mountaineers were downed 90-84 by Durham. Dave Almas (Hamilton) and Nick Gaspic (Hamilton) scored 16 apiece for Mohawk. Gacic had 15, Trbojevic and Phil Bucknor (Hamilton) collected 14 points each.

Mountaineers’ coach Brian Jonker says his charges will have to play much better in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend if they are going to put themselves in a good position to make the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association playoffs.

They meet Algoma University Jan. 12 and Sault College the next day.

The Mountaineers are third in the West division with a 3-4 record. London’s Fanshawe leads the division with a perfect 7-0 record. Niagara is second at 4-1.
