The Mohawk women’s volleyball team lost only one match over the weekend, but the timing of their defeat eliminated the Mountaineers from an invitational tournament at Durham College in Oshawa.
The Mountaineers split their first match with host Durham, winning 26-24 and losing 22-25. They then swept North Bay Canadore 25-17, 25-16, defeated Windsor St. Clair 25-12, 25-18, topped North Bay Nipissing 27-25, 26-24 and Niagara 25-19, 25-16.
Those results gave Mohawk first place in their pool. But when they crossed over to meet second place Humber from the other pool, they lost 19-25, 18-25 to the Hawks and were sent to the sidelines. The tourney did not offer a bronze medal game. Ironically, the team Mohawk swept earlier in the day, Nipissing, went on to take the title.
Mountaineer setter Katie Johnston was named a tournament allstar.
Mohawk plays its first Ontario Colleges Athletic Association league match of 2007 Wednesday (Jan. 10) when the Ancaster Redeemer Royals visit the Fennell Gym at 6:00 pm. Mohawk is third in the Central West division with a 4-2 record while Redeemer is second in the West division with a 6-2 mark.
