Algoma University Thunderbirds took two Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball victories from the Mohawk Mountaineers in Sault Ste. Marie Friday night (Jan. 12).
The men lost a squeaker, 80-76, to let Algoma improved its record to 4-4, while Mohawk slipped to 3-5.
The Mountaineers will try to rebound Saturday afternoon when they face Sault College (0-7).
Things were looking good early for the Mohawk women, before they were whipped by Algoma Friday, in their only game this weekend. Mohawk lost 69-31.
The Mountaineers took an 11-4 lead, but the Thunderbirds turned things and were in front 33-15 at the intermission. Mohawk failed to score in the last eight minutes of the opening half. To make matters worse, the Mountaineers got into foul trouble in the second half.
Carrie Lawton was Mohawk’s top scorer with nine points.
The Mountaineers are now 1-6, while Algoma is 7-1.
Mohawk is home for a doubleheader against Redeemer on Tuesday (Jan. 16). The women tipoff at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
