Hamilton and District Bonspiel finalists crowned

Bob Biehler’s rink from the Burlington Curling Club beat club mate Dennis Morgan, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon to take the Men’s Open First Event trophy in the week-long M&M sponsored Hamilton and District Bonspiel.

Both rinks played two games on Saturday with the Biehler-skipped foursome knocking out another BCC rink, Mike Dales, 7-6, in the morning draw while Morgan eliminated a Dundas Granite rink skipped by Glenn Dorsey, 8-1.

In the Second Event, Tom Mitton of the Hamilton Victoria club was a 5-1 winner over the Burlington Golf and Country Club’s quartet skipped by Kevin Knapman. Mitton was a 7-2 winner over the Granite’s Rick Thurston in the morning semifinals and Knapman ousted Grimsby Curling Club’s Garnet Mitchell, 8-4, in the other semi.

Rick Helm and his BG&CC foursome needed an extra end 6-5 decision to sneak past Ron Long of the Granite for Third Event honours. Helm was an 11-2 semifinal winner over the Vic’s Robert Mills and Long dispatched the BG&CC’s Paul Theoret, 9-2.

The Glendale’s Barry Reid was a 6-1 winner over the BCC’s Rob Depodesta for the Fourth Event prize. In their morning semis, Depodesta was a 6-5 winner over Paul Feldkamp, also from the BCC. Reid sent the Grimsby rink skipped by Howie Meinzinger home with a 6-3 decision.

In the Women’s Open, two Granite rinks met in the First Event final with S. Trainor edging L. Gregg, 7-4.Trainor beat C. Benninger of the Glanford Curling Club and Gregg was a 7-5 winner of Grimsby’s M. Solvason in the morning semifinals.

Glanford’s N. Siwak took the Second Event, beating the BCC’s E. Vachon, 8-1. In the semis, Siwak eliminated the BCC’s A. Young, 8-1, while Vachon was taking care of W. Oughtred of the BCC, 9-8.

The Glendale’s H. Moore won Third Event honours, just getting past L. Hall of Grimsby, 8-7.Hall used a 4-3 win over L. Fitzgerald to advance and Moore made the final with the same score over D. Patterson of the BG&CC. G. MacInnis of the BCC was a 5-1 winner over the Glendale’s B. MacKay in the Fourth Event. MacInnis beat the Dundas Valley’s Gardiner-Dean, 4-3, and MacKay was a 4-3 semifinal winner over Glanford’s D. Martin.

Howard Walters of Grimsby was a 9-5 winner over Glanford’s Gord Satchell to win the Master Men’s First Event crown. Jim Barnet of the BG&CC was an 8-2 winner over Bruce Beaven of Glanford in the Second Event.

The Third Event was won by the Granite’s Harry Prentice, who silenced the BCC’s George Quinn, 9-1, Grimsby’s Ed Cernick was a 10-6 and Fourth Event winner over Glendale’s Joe Rocchi.

John Turner’s Glanford rink took an 8-2 win over the Vic’s Bob Sindrey to grab the Senior Men’s First Event trophy. The Second Event went to Glendale’s Harvey Hicks with his 8-3 win over the Granite’s Ken Hayashi.

In the Third Event, Stephen Bernard of the Valley was a 6-4 victor over Glanford’s Doug Keyes. The Fourth Event was won by Glendale’s Gerry Smith, who beat Glanford’s Russ Smith, 9-3.
