Mohawk edges Redeemer 73-67 in OCAA cage play

Back in the winner’s circle.

Smarting from a pair of Ontario College Athletic Association basketball losses after a weekend trip to Sault Ste. Marie, the Mohawks Mountaineers men’s basketball team outlasted Redeemer Royals, 73-67, on Tuesday night in Ancaster.

Royals held a 30-28 lead at the half.

The win left the Mountaineers with a 4-6 record while the Royals fell to 2-5 in the OCAA West Division.

Igor Trbojevic (Hamilton) led Mohawk with 21 points while Marko Gacic (Hamilton) added 17 and 12 rebounds. Nick Gaspic (Hamilton) also scored 17 for the winners.

Redeemer’s top point getter was Phillip Hemens (Bracebridge) with 15.

Mohawk coach Brian Jonker said the win was an important confidence builder for his charges. He offered special praise for Marvin Deguzman (Hamilton), who came off the bench for short stints but gave the team really good energy in a four minute stretch late in the ball game.

The Mountaineers will be back on home court Friday (Jan. 19) to face the Marygrove College Mustangs of Detroit in an exhibition test at 7 p.m. at the Fennell Gym.

Mountaineers next OCAA game is Feb. 2 at home against Redeemer.
