V-ball squeaker win moves Mohawk women closer to first

The Mohawk women’s volleyball squad moved to within four points of first place in the Central West Region with a thrilling 3-2 win over Niagara Knights on Tuesday (Jan. 23). The scores were 20-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 15-13 in the game played at Mohawk’s Fennell Gym.

The Mountaineers survived a 20 kill performance from Heidi Bench (St. Catharines) of the Knights, with balanced scoring and a strong defensive game.

Sarah Borycki (Hamilton) led Mohawk with 15 points from four kills, seven blocks and four aces. Stacy Dafoe (Paris) and Janette Jakubiec (Dundas) each had 11 points, while Danielle Smith (Cambridge) and Leah Waxman (Port Dover) each contributed 10 points.

The Mountaineers upped their record to 6-3. Nipissing leads the division with an 8-0 record.

Niagara is now tied with Redeemer for top spot in the West, both at 8-2.
