The Mohawk Mountaineers men’s basketball team outlasted the Redeemer Royals 72-69 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action at the Fennell Gym on Friday night.

Matt Bruyn made four clutch free throws and Nick Gaspic added three, all in the final 30 seconds for the winners, who improved their record to 5-6. Redeemer fell to 2-8.

Igor Trbojevic led the Mountaineers with 21 points. Gaspic had 18. Mike Soluk scored 13 points for the Royals.

Mohawk’s women’s basketball team took a long time to get going, but defeated the Royals 49-38 in the doubleheader opener.

The last time these teams met, Jan. 16 at Redeemer’s Ancaster gym, the Mountaineers were easy 75-39 victors.

But not this time. The Royals led 21-17 at the half and after the break the visitors increased the margin to 31-21. Mohawk, however, went on a 16-2 run to take the lead. The game remained tight until the last couple of minutes when the Mountaineers pulled away.

Erinn Belot had 14 points to lead Mohawk, now 3-6. Carrie Lawton added 10. Tanisha Vandenburg scored 10 points for Redeemer, now 0-8.
