Hamilton track athletes in full stride at recent indoor meets

It might be chilly on the outside, but the Hamilton Olympic Club is warming things up on the indoor track circuit this season.

At the recent 2007 Ontario Relay Championships and Junior 3000m Walk Championships at York University, the HOC’s Women’s Junior team came away with a No. 1 ranking.

The 1600m sprint medley team of Monique Cryne, Kelly Morrison, Brittany Kadwell, and Jillian Wyman placed first in a time of 4:28.47. Not to be outdone, the women’s junior 4 x 800m relay quartet of Rebecca Hallam, Emma Dalziel, Lisa Alaimo, and Samantha Beattie clocked at 10:50.40 to grab first place.

Morrison, Kadwell, and Cryne teamed with Jaclyn Van Leerzem in the 4 x 200 relay to finish fourth in a time of 1:52.23.

The Men’s Junior 4 x 200 relay team of Damiam Vassell, Kyle Stewart, Steven King, and Kurt Nutma ran a 1:34.96 and placed fourth.

In individual events, Morrison had two fourth place finishes in the Juvenile Girls 60m hurdles (9.61) and in the Open Women’s long jump (5.12m).

Alyssa DiCesare shotput her way to first in the midget division (3kg), with a winning toss of 6.99m on her second of six tries. She also stood ninth in the Women’s Open high jump, clearing 1.20m.

In the Women’s Open 60m dash, Kadwell settled for 32nd in a time of 8.58. Van Leerzem was 50th in 9.14. Wyman had a sixth in the Women’s Open 600m (1:41.04) and a seventh in the Open 300m (44.51).

In the Women’s Open 1000m, Hallam was 16th (3:20.33) and Alaimo was 26th (3:36.38).

Michael DiCesare had a best toss of 11.22m in the Boys Juvenile shotput (5kg), good enough for fifth place. King was clocked in 7.35 seconds (17th place) in the Men’s Open 60m. Stewart’s time of 7.37 gave him 20th place and he finished seventh (37.72) in the Men’s open 300m.

Vassell, whose time of 7.42 in the Men’s Open 60m gave him 24th place, took top spot in the Men’s Open long jump, with a winning leap of 6.40m.

Nutma finished the men’s 60m in 7.69 and in 34th. Four positions back was Stephen Cameron (7.86) who went to 17th place (40.01) in the Men’s Open 300m run. Decoda Scott had a 7.99 for 43rd in the Men’s Open 60m.

At the Nike Track Classic 2007 meet at the University of Toronto, Sarah Sable took 19th place (8.36) in the Women’s Open 60m. In the 60m hurdles she had a final placing of sixth (9.86) after a preliminary heat run of 9.83, which was third best.

Wyman placed ninth (44.50) in the Open 300m and was third (1:38.80) in the 600m race. Morrison took fourth place in the 60m hurdles (9.81) after a sixth-place heat finish of 9.94. She picked up a seventh in the high jump with a 1.55m effort.

In her 60m hurdle race Van Leerzem was 10th (11.15).

Stewart who had a preliminary run of 7.42 in the 60m, settled for 17th in the finals with a time of 7.45. King was 20th (7.47) with Cameron coming in at 45th (7.98) but jumping to 32nd in the 300m (40.63). Nutma’s time of 8.03 in the 60m was good enough for 47th.

The HOC’s men’s relay team took second in the 4 x 200, with a time of 1:37.76.

Alyssa DiCesare grabbed first place in the shot with a best toss of 7.20m at the Ontario Track and Field Association’s Indoor Combined Events and Midget/Juvenile 1500m Walk Championship in January.

She also was second high jump (1.20m). Wyman took eighth spot in the 400m race, with a run of 1:01.86 and placed 25th in the 200m (28:44).

Michael DiCesare was third best putting the shot 11.04m in the juvenile division.
