Mohawk men’s sweep of Falcons is tune-up for OCAA volleyball playoffs

Mohawk’s men’s volleyball team will take its 11-1 record into the Ontario College Athletic Association playoffs next weekend (Feb. 22-24) after closing out regular season play on Thursday night with a three-game sweep of London’s Fanshawe Falcons.

The Central West Division-leading Mountaineers dropped the visiting Falcons to the Fennell Gym 25-23, 30-28, 25-18.

The highlight of the match came in the second game when Fanshawe led 24-21 and could have tied the contest with one more point, but failed to put the Mountaineers away.

Jasmin Cull had 16 kills and two service aces for 18 points to lead Mohawk. Steve Pawelczyk had 10 kills, one stuff block and three aces for 14 points and Kevin Watson added seven kills, and three blocks for 10 points.

Mohawk’s only loss came last weekend during a northern Ontario swing. North Bay’s Nipissing University stopped the Mountaineers 10-game string of victories by beating Mohawk 25-22, 25-22, and 25-20. Prior to the Nipissing loss, Mohawk swept Canadore in the games, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15.

The OCAA playoffs will take place at Barrie’s Georgian College. Mohawk goes into the playoffs ranked No. 2 in the province. Algonquin is No. 1 with a 13-0 record.
