Mohawk’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are off to Kingston for post season play this weekend.
The men stayed alive for an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championship berth after defeating the Niagara Knights 76-67 at the Fennell Gym Tuesday night (Feb. 20). Mohawk, Algoma, and Lambton all finished regular season play with 7-7 records, but the Mountaineers held the tie-breaker over both teams.
Igor Trbojevic led the Mountaineers with 24 points against the Knights. Nick Gaspic and Marko Gacic each had 15 points and Gacic pulled in 14 rebounds.
The Mountaineers will meet St. Lawrence College in Kingston in a qualifying game this weekend. Date and time of the contest have yet to be determined.
The winner advances to the provincial finals.
The women Mountaineers are in a similar qualifying situation. They lost 48-34 to Niagara and will face St. Lawrence College.
Niagara’s Kaitlyn McKenna had 20 points to lead all scorers. For Mohawk, Erinn Belot scored 12 points and Amy Whitaker added seven.
Mohawk completed the regular season with 3-9 record.
The date and time of the women’s game in Kingston are also to be announced.
