Mohawk Mountaineers came away from the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball championships with silver and bronze medals on Saturday.
The men’s team took the silver medallion while the women were bronze medalists in the championships played at Barrie’s Georgian College on Saturday (Feb. 24).
The men, last year’s OCAA winners, lost 3-2 to the Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa in the final.
Mohawk fell behind by two games, rallied to tie, but then lost the deciding fifth set. The scores were 22-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 11-15.
Jasmin Cull recorded 25 kills and one service ace and was named Mohawk’s player of the game. He was also named to the tournament all-star team along with teammate Peter Sniuolis.
Earlier in the day, Mohawk’s women’s team won the bronze medal, defeating Algonquin 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 28-26, 25-14). Katie Johnston was named the Mountaineers’ player of the match.
Stacy Dafoe had seven kills and six aces and made the tourney all-star team. In game four, Dafoe served 11 times in a row.
Leah Waxman scored 12 kills and one ace, Slavica Beader had 10 kills and Sarah Borycki notched five kills, one stuff block and two aces.
