Stallwood helps Canada to cross country gold

Hamilton Olympic Club member Rebecca Stallwood is one of Canada’s golden girls.

The Burlington resident was a member of the Canadian entry which placed first in the North America, Central America, and Caribbean Cross-Country Championship meet recently in Clermont, Florida. Stallwood was the third member of the Canadian team, and seventh overall to cross the finish line in the Senior Women’s 6 Km course.

And while Stallwood was competing in Florida, HOC members were making their presence known at the Ontario Masters Indoor Championship at York University.

Competing in the Men’s 75 age division, Bill Thompson placed first in the 60 metre event with a time of 10.95 and then took first in the 200m race with a time of 39.75.

Rhona Trott was a dominant force in the Women’s 55 category, taking five firsts. She was first through the tape in the 60m (9.57), and first in the 60m hurdle (11.86), setting a meet and Canadian age group record. Trott then grabbed the top honour in the 200m run (32.58), and added a first in the shotput with a heave of 7.91m. She put her name in the meet and Canadian age-group record books a second time with a long jump effort of 3.68m.

At the Ontario Track and Field Association’s Indoor Championships for Bantam, Midget, and Junior athletes at Windsor, Jaclyn van Leerzem posted a 44th placing in the 60m event with a time of 9.08. She was 49th in the 200m (29.42), and 30th in the 400m (1:07.05).
In the Junior Men’s division, Damion Vassell ran the 60m preliminaries in 7.32 to qualify in 15th place and placed 16th in the semis (7.29). He added a fourth place finish in the 200m event 22.98) and was fifth in the long jump (6.56m).

Steven King was 24th in the 60m Junior Men preliminaries (7.39) and finished 38th (24.59) in the 200 metre event.
In the same age group, Kyle Stewart also posted a 24th place in the 60m preliminaries (7.39), was 20th in the 200m (23.71), and seventh in the 400m (52.53).

Kurt Nutma had a time of 7.61 in the Junior Men’s 60m prelims for 39th. He was 34th in the 200m (24.41) and 21st in the 400m (54.02).
