5 pin bowlers take aim at provincial titles

The champion bowlers from 15 zones are competing for provincial titles at the 2007 Ontario Open 5 Pin Championships being held April 4 to 7 at Hamilton’s Sherwood Centre where it has held centre stage for 32 of the past 33 years.

Competitions will be held in four team events and two singles divisions. The singles competition will feature the top three men and the top three ladies from each zone playing five games to open the tournament with the top 50% advancing to play five more games Thursday morning. This will qualify the top five bowlers in each event to advance to a stepladder finals on Saturday afternoon to conclude the tourney.

Three teams – men’s, ladies and mixed – will play each other once on Thursday and Friday, qualifying the top four teams in each event for a stepladder finals Saturday morning. These five champions will represent Southern Ontario at the Canadian Championships in Sudbury from May 30 to June 2.

The seniors team event – for bowlers 50-plus is in its fourth year and will crown a provincial champion. There is no Canadian competition for this division.

Zone teams are formed from a 20-game qualifying round. The top three qualifiers are eligible for singles and team play.

The men’s and ladies’ teams are the top six qualifiers with the next three men and ladies on the mixed team.
