Grimsby’s Ward wears second Ontario Open 5-pin bowling crown


Grimsby’s Connie Ward won her second ladies’ singles crown, capturing this year’s Ontario Open 5 Pin Championship Saturday at Sherwood Centre.

Qualifying first with a 10-game score of 2,955, she continued her domination with a decisive 313 to 256 victory over Kristi Lampman of Woodstock in the title match. Ward won her first singles crown in 1986.

Hamilton’s Andrea Straughan won a bronze medal, losing 265 to 229 to Lampman in the semi-finals.

Josh Perrone, 20, of Ottawa won the men’s singles 254-239 over Guelph’s Kevin Berg. Hamilton’s Dave Birkby finished fourth.

In team play, Hamilton collected bronze medals in mixed and senior competition.

Central Ontario won the men’s, Tri County took the ladies, Niagara grabbed the mixed, and Grand River topped the seniors.

The champions will represent Southern Ontario in the Canadian Championships in Sudbury, May 30-June 2.
