The team may be struggling looking for wins, but first baseman Geoff Allen of the Hamilton Thunderbirds is the Rawlings Intercounty Baseball League Player of the Week (ending May 21).
In two games, Allen connected for five hits in 10 at bats, scored four times, hit two doubles and homered twice while knocking in four runs.
On May 18 against the London Majors, the veteran first baseman connected for his two doubles, scored a run and made six outs at first, and assisted on another in London’s 8-5 win. Two days later in Kitchener, he hit two home runs, one of which was the game-winning, three-run round tripper in the 10th inning.
On the day, he had four RBI as the Thunderbirds (1-4) won 12-9 for the first time this season. His .400 batting average has him sitting in a four-way tie for eighth in the league batting race.
Meanwhile, teammate and second baseman Tom Robertson is tied for third in league batting with a .476 average.
Unfortunately, Hamilton’s woes are on the mound. The T-Birds pitching staff has a 9.20 earned-run-average, last in the nine-team league. Hamilton is sixth (.250) in batting.
The Thunderbirds are back in Intercounty action on Friday, 7.30 p.m. when they are hosts to the Stratford Nationals at Bernie Arbour Stadium.
