Rugby showdown likely between Newfoundland and Niagara


The Niagara Thunder and Newfoundland Rock have potentially set the table for a winner take all encounter in Burlington on Aug. 4. Both squads had bonus point victories on the weekend to lead the Rugby Canada Super League’s Eastern Conference.

In Ottawa, the Thunder had a 46-14 win over the Harlequins at Twin Elm rugby park while the Rock scored 11 tries in a 77-13 blow out over the Toronto Xtreme in Markham.

The Thunder’s win lifted them to a 5-0 record with 23 points in the table, while the Rock has a game in hand with a 4-0 mark and 20 points. The Newfoundland squad, which plays Nova Scotia in Halifax today (Monday), would move into first place with a victory, and either 24 or 25 points heading into their final contest against the Thunder.

Scoring for Thunder were Steve Piatek 14 points, Mike Scholz had seven and Cam Mitchell, Dave Knowles, Alistair Clarke, Andrew Thomson and Geoff Sinke each had a try.

Meanwhile, in the west, the Crimson Tide fell to the Saskatchewan Prairie Fire 27-6.
