The first full season for the Hammer City Roller Girls is coming to a close, with the “The Steel Town Showdown” set for August 25th.
This is not roller derby skating of the past – it’s now a faced-paced and hard-hitting sport fueled by athletic endurance, strength, passion and entertainment. And this summer roller derby has become a “smash hit” as hundreds of fans from across the GTA have flocked to the Hammer to watch the roller girls battle it out on the track against their opponents.
Both Hamilton teams in the league have won challenges from teams in London, ON, Montreal, QC and Buffalo NY, USA. Now the Hamilton Harlots and The Steel Town Tank Girls will turn against each other to face-off in the 2007 season finale, “The Steel Town Showdown”. It will take place on Saturday, August 25th at the Market Street Arena (J.L. Grightmire) in Dundas. The doors will open at 5:30PM and the game whistle will sound at 7:00PM.
The finale is an all-ages licensed event. Tickets can be bought in advance for $10 or $12 at the door. Children’s tickets are $7. One dollar of each ticket sold will be given to the Hammer City Roller Girls charity of choice – The Soroptimist Club of Stoney Creek and Niagara. Also, in support of the Hamilton Food Bank the Roller Girls will be giving a free autographed game poster to each person who makes a non-perishable food donation.
Established in January, 2006, The Hammer City Roller Girls Inc. is an all female, skater operated roller derby league based in Hamilton, Ontario. Presently there are two teams within the league: The Hamilton Harlots and the Steel Town Tank Girls, amounting to approximately 30 skaters in total.
