Marshall’s Mustangs coming marching to McMaster

Greg Marshall, who coached the Marauders to four straight Yates Cup titles, returns to McMaster University this weekend at the helm of the Western Mustangs. The Marauders and the Mustangs both have 0-1 records in Ontario University Athletics football.

Marshall left the Marauders to take the head coaching job of the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a venture that lasted just more than one season before he was axed. Marshall’s Marauders won the Yates Cup, awarded to the OUAl champions, from 2000 to 2003. He was an assistant coach with the Mustangs last season.

In week one of OUA play, Stefan Ptaszek’s Marauders dressed 12 first-year and 12 second-year players and demonstrated that they can compete with the top teams in the league. Fifth year senior, Adam Archibald was superb completing 26 of 37 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for 23 yards.

McMaster receivers Mike Bradwell and Rob Serviss had strong games for the Marauders.Defensively, Marauders were solid at the linebacker position, but will need to contain the line of scrimmage, clean up the penalties, and improve their tackling.

The Mustangs are coming off a home overtime loss after having surrendered a 17-point lead against the Queens Golden Gaels. The Mustangs are led by quarterback Michael Faulds and a solid cast of receivers including David Clayton and Josh Starr. The Mustangs also have a potent running game powered by Randy McAuley (attended the Toronto Argonauts training camp) who rushed for 214 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns in week one.

Defensively, the Mustangs secondary, including Nick Kordic, who attended the Hamilton Tiger-Cats training camp, Cory Watson and Corey McNair should provide an excellent challenge for the McMaster passing attack.
